Hong Kong is often subject to different types of adverse weather during the course of the year. At the HKJFL the safety of participants is paramount.
Matches can be cancelled due to very bad weather and please check the HKJFL facebook page for notification of this around 6:30-7:00am on match dates and please also check with your club representation.
Thunderstorms frequently occur over Hong Kong during the summer, and can be accurately monitored via the Hong Kong Observatory. When the Thunderstorm Warning is issued, HKJFL will monitor the location of the storm/s and post on it’s Facebook page if sessions need to be cancelled or if participants need to be collected early. If a large storm is heading towards a particular venue, we will pre-empt its arrival and cancel the session in advance.
Very Hot Weather Warning
Hong Kong is located in the tropics, and in the summer the temperature can be very hot. When the Hong Kong Observatory issues the Very Hot Weather Warning, sessions will continue as normal. We will ensure that the participants have plenty of water breaks, but it is the parents’ duty to provide their children with enough fluids, especially at venues where they are not available, either free or to purchase. We would also recommend using hats and sun protection on especially sunny days.
Cold Weather Warning
Hong Kong’s climate is quite variable, and in the winter temperatures can drop to below 10 degrees Centigrade. When the Hong Kong Observatory issues the Cold Weather Warning, sessions will continue as normal. Please ensure that your child is wearing enough warm clothing. Please make sure your child is picked up promptly from the session, and if it has been raining, bring a change of warm clothing.
Sessions will continue as normal, unless the Air Pollution Index is forecast to be Severe. However, please note that if participants are unwell, have breathing difficulties or underlying medical conditions such as asthma, HKJFL recommends that they do not attend sessions if the air is highly polluted, or if they do, please ensure that they have the appropriate prescribed medicine with them. If you are in any doubt, err on the side of caution and do not send them to the venue.
Amber Rainstorm Signal
When the amber rainstorm signal is raised, it does not necessarily mean that the rain is in the location of your child’s session. Assume that the session is on, and wait for our advice.
Red Rainstorm Signal
When the red rainstorm signal is raised, it does not necessarily mean that the rain is in the location of your child’s session. Assume that the session is on, and wait for our advice.
Black Rain Signal
When the black rainstorm signal is hoisted, all sessions in Hong Kong will be cancelled. When the signal is lowered, please wait for our advice regarding the resumption of sessions later in the day.
Typhoon Signal 1
In the event of Typhoon Signal number one, there is generally no need to cancel sessions, unless other adverse weather conditions are present (please refer to the above).
Typhoon Signal 3
When Typhoon Signal number three is issued, please wait for advice from our office. For some venues, such as schools or kindergartens, sessions may be cancelled as the facilities will be closed. Sessions will also be cancelled in adverse weather conditions associated with an approaching typhoon (please see above).
Typhoon Signal 8
When Typhoon Signal 8 or above is raised, all sessions in Hong Kong will be cancelled. When the signal is lowered, please wait for our advice regarding the resumption of sessions later in the day.
